Tips for Parents

How Do I Choose the Right Size Clothes for My Kids?

Every Indian parent has been there - holding up two sizes in a store aisle, unsure which one will actually fit. This guide ends that guessing game for good.

"She outgrew it before she even wore it twice." Sound familiar? You are not alone - and there is a smarter way to shop.

Choosing the right clothing size for your child is one of those things that sounds simple until you are standing in a store with a 4-year-old who is actually the height of a 6-year-old. Indian children's clothing labels vary wildly between brands, and "age 3-4" on one tag can mean something completely different on another.

At DaveDresses, we have dressed thousands of children across India - from newborns in Tiruppur to 10-year-olds in Delhi - and we have learnt one truth above all: measurements beat age labels every single time.

Why Age Labels Alone Do Not Work

Indian children are wonderfully diverse. Two 5-year-olds in the same classroom can differ by 10 cm in height. One might be lanky with narrow shoulders; the other stocky with a broader chest. A label that says "5-6 years" simply cannot account for this variation.

Add to that the fact that cotton garments - especially quality 100% cotton like we use at DaveDresses - can shift very slightly in the first wash. Buying purely by age means you are one growth spurt and one laundry cycle away from a garment that no longer fits.

Step 1: Measure Your Child (It Takes 2 Minutes)

Grab a soft measuring tape and note down these four measurements:

Height

Have your child stand against a wall, feet flat, looking straight ahead. Mark and measure from floor to the top of the head.

Chest

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of the chest, keeping it parallel to the floor.

Waist

Around the natural waistline - the narrowest part of the torso, just above the belly button.

Inseam (for bottoms)

From the crotch to the ankle along the inner leg. Essential for trousers, leggings and joggers.

Step 2: Match to a Size Chart

Below is a general reference chart for Indian children's clothing. Always cross-check with the specific brand's chart - at DaveDresses, our Size Guide provides detailed measurements per product category.

Kids Clothing Size Chart by Age and Height - India Reference
Age Label Height (cm) Chest (cm) Waist (cm)
0 - 3 Months Up to 62 40 - 43 39 - 41
3 - 6 Months 62 - 68 43 - 46 41 - 44
6 - 12 Months 68 - 80 46 - 50 44 - 48
1 - 2 Years 80 - 92 50 - 53 48 - 51
2 - 4 Years 92 - 104 53 - 57 51 - 54
4 - 6 Years 104 - 116 57 - 61 54 - 57
6 - 8 Years 116 - 128 61 - 65 57 - 60
8 - 10 Years 128 - 140 65 - 69 60 - 63
10 - 12 Years 140 - 152 69 - 74 63 - 67

General reference figures. Always refer to the brand's own size guide for the most accurate fit.

Step 3: Factor in the Garment Type

Different clothing types fit differently, even in the same size:

"When in doubt, size up. Children grow faster than parents expect, and a slightly larger garment will always be more comfortable than one that is too tight."

Shopping Online? Here Is What to Do

Online shopping is convenient but comes with one challenge: you cannot feel the fabric or try it on. Here is how to shop smart:

  1. 1 Measure before you browse - take fresh measurements. Kids can grow a centimetre in a single month.
  2. 2 Read the brand's size chart - every brand is different. Check our DaveDresses Size Guide before ordering.
  3. 3 Check the fabric - 100% cotton has minimal stretch; jersey cotton blends have more give.
  4. 4 WhatsApp us before ordering - message +91 93609 56837 and we will personally help you pick the right size based on your child's measurements.

A Note on Cotton and Shrinkage

All DaveDresses garments are made from 100% pre-shrunk cotton, meaning minimal shrinkage after the first wash. We recommend cold machine wash on a gentle cycle and flat drying in shade to maintain shape, softness, and colour.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right clothing size for my child?

Measure your child's height, chest, and waist, then compare to the brand's size chart. Measurements are far more reliable than age labels, which vary between brands.

Should I buy kids clothes one size up?

Yes - sizing up by one is a smart move, especially for younger children who grow quickly. It extends the garment's life by a few months and feels more comfortable during active play.

What is the standard kids clothing size chart in India?

Indian sizes by age and height: 2-4y (92-104cm), 4-6y (104-116cm), 6-8y (116-128cm), 8-10y (128-140cm), 10-12y (140-152cm). Always cross-check with the brand's own chart.

Do DaveDresses clothes run true to size?

Yes. Our garments are true-to-size. For children between sizes, we recommend sizing up. See our Size Guide for full measurements per category.

How should I measure my child for clothing?

Use a soft measuring tape. Record height, chest (fullest point), waist (narrowest point), and inseam for bottoms. Compare against the size chart rather than using age labels alone.
